The Chen laboratory is unraveling basic mechanisms of lung injury and repair. Our focus is on how lung epithelial cells interact with other cellular compartments and with the extracellular matrix to regulate inflammatory cell recruitment and lung fibrosis in various cell-based and animal models. Working under direct supervision, as a Research Associate II, you will perform routine and increasingly complex laboratory tasks and procedures and develops technical expertise in one or more areas relevant to research projects. You will participate in research activities involving all aspects of the research process, to include, but not limited to; investigation, technical, testing/validation of results, and report findings. Will perform a variety of routine experimental protocols and procedures to support the objectives of laboratory research projects and will observe and comply with safety standards and procedures, assist in preparation of data for publication and/or presentation at scholarly meetings, and assist in general laboratory maintenance. This role does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the design of new complex or unusual protocols and techniques.
  • Keep accurate and detailed records of experiments and results and assists in identifying and troubleshooting of unexpected results
  • Order laboratory supplies and supports laboratory operations
  • Maintain lab equipment and related records and may coordinate use of lab equipment.
  • Assist in the operation of specialized equipment, as required by the area of research
  • Orient research laboratory assistants or lower level research associates and undergraduate student researchers on day-to-day lab operations and routine procedures

Department and/or unit specific responsibilities:

  • Ensure the necessary animals are available for all lab members
  • Order supplies and maintain the supply stocks keeping an organized laboratory inventories of reagents
  • Orient new laboratory members to the policies and regulations for their research
  • Maintainlaboratory up to date in all policies and regulations required by the various oversight committees
  • Independently create and update protocols for all research in the laboratory (e.g., IACUC)
  • Understand the basic premise of all the laboratory projects and help laboratory members carry out their research
  • Facilitate publications and grant applications by generating new data for the research project
  • Analyze data and prepare scientific findings for publication as author or co-author
  • Work independently on a project and push it forward into novel areas
  • Collaborate with lab members to move their project in novel directions
  • Compile and organize the data generated by members of the laboratory and create appropriate figures with statistical analysis
  • Oversee all work in the laboratory to ensure it is carried out with the highest scientific rigor
  • Keep animal costs down and minimizing the waste of animals resources
  • Make sure ordering of reagents is not duplicated
  • Negotiate bulk orders to decrease the cost of research

Other duties include:

  • Provide miscellaneous clinical/research support (ad hoc data analysis, hypothesis development, programming, troubleshooting, etc.)
  • Organize clinical/research trials in conjunction with the Principal Investigator and sponsor and/or funding source
  • Make independent presentations
  • Provide system administration and maintenance for the local workstation network
  • Train Research Lab Assistants, Research Fellow, lower level Research Associates, and other related support staff
  • Process human blood and specimen samples from clinical research participants

Educational Requirements:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in biological science required

Experience and Skillset:

  • At least two (2) years of lab experience
  • Experience working with blood and blood components in a laboratory setting, preferred
  • Understanding of general research objectives and familiarity with routine laboratory procedures, experimental protocols, and overall lab organization
  • Highly motivated, independently with superior interpersonal, communication, and strong organizational skills
  • Computer skills to include, but not limited to, Excel, Word, Access and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of administrative policies and procedures and budgetary requirements and policies
  • Knowledge in and experience with good microbiological practices, work with biosafety cabinets, and other laboratory equipment used for the processing of clinical research specimens
  • Excellent aseptic technique
  • Able to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Comfortable handling biological specimens
